Disney's Wuthering Heights

Description

This is for the :icondisney-club: contest Books into movies.

I haven't read that many books in my life, so my choice of books to do for this contest was basically limited to books that I had been forced to read for school. And just because I was forced to read these books does not mean that they were not good, because I absolutely adore Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte. In fact, I received a copy of Wuthering Heights as a gift from my teacher in Year 12, along with two other girls, because we were the only students studying extension English. We had a lot of fun in that class, and my Wuthering Heights book always reminds me of that class. I decided I had to do this book for this contest, for that reason, and also because after looking at one of my little sisters Disney colouring books I saw a picture of Belle, the prince, and Mrs Potts having tea, and reading, and of course I thought of Cathy,Hareton and Mrs Dean from Wuthering Heights.

Who's on the Poster?

The young lady on the horse is Young Cathy. She is free spirited and a little spoilt, but she loves her Father and Mrs Dean very much. The horse is named Minnie. She is Cathy's animal companion. She acts a bit like a dog (it says in the book that minnie "obeys her like a dog", so let's extend on this, shall we?) Minnie can also talk and acts as a comic relief character.

Hareton is the young man pulling the horse. He is a farm hand at Mr Heathcliff's estate, Wuthering Heights. His Father used to own the estate, however Heathcliff managed take ownership after he died. Hareton is not good with words, and has a very harsh exterior, however, he would be a sweet man if he knew how.

Nelly Dean is the lady following after Cathy. She has been in charge of raising Cathy ever since her mother died. She is strictly no nonsense and does not appreciate Cathy always running off. However, she loves Cathy as if she were her own daughter.

Mr Heathcliff is the man in the back. He is apparently an old friend of Cathy's mother. Cathy has been forbidden to ever talk to him, as he is her father's rival. He is very manipulative and cruel. He will never stop until he gets what he wants, even if what he wants is unobtainable. He calls Cathy Catherine.

Finally, that big Mufasa cloud thing is Cathy's mother; Cathy. Maybe we'll call her Catherine, since that's what everyone (besides Heathcliff) calls her. She is the mysterious ghost that haunts Wuthering Heights.

All of the characters are standing outside of Wuthering Heights.

Characters who aren't on the poster:

Edgar: is Cathy's father. He owns the neighbouring estate to Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange. He is very protective of Cathy.

Linton: Linton is Heathcliff's son. He is spoilt and selfish, however, he is also very weak and fragile. He is very frightened of his father.

What happens in this version:

Cathy reflects on her version of the events of Wuthering Heights; how she grew up sheltered in a rich estate, and how she wanted friends (boo hoo). Enter Linton, a boy her age that she meets as a child. He is sick, but she wants to be his best friend. However, the boy has to leave, for reasons she is not told, and she is again left friendless.
As she grows older her father goes away on a business trip. Cathy takes this opportunity to run over the moors toward Wuthering Heights. There she meets Hareton, a young, rough, and very dirty man who shows her around the moors. When they go back to the house, Cathy meets Linton, the boy she met as a child. They become friends very quickly, as they share common interests, such as books, and start teasing Hareton because they think that he is unintelligent. When Heathcliff meets Cathy he manipulates her into thinking that her father purposely forbade her from visiting because he didn't like Heathcliff. Cathy believes this and so continues to visit.
Meanwhile, as Linton is very sick, he has little energy to entertain Cathy, so Heathcliff uses Hareton to try and make him jealous. Hareton falls in love with Cathy, which doesn't really bother Heathcliff, because he knows (from experience) that Cathy will marry Linton because of his wealth, regardless if she ever loved Hareton.

Basically this is the start. The next part contains spoilers.

The rest of the movie would be about Hareton and Cathy falling in love, being haunted by ghosts, Heathcliff forcing Catherine to marry Linton, Linton and Edgar dying, and finally sending Heathcliff mad via the power of love. I feel like he needs to be flung off the rafters of Wuthering Heights while Cathy tries to save him for Hareton's sake, that's how all Disney villains die. Meanwhile Catherine and Hareton get married and they return to the Grange and live happily ever after, the end.

The entire story is basically the Lion King 2 meets Beauty and the Beast. This is just a little opening scene I decided to write.

So our story begins with a live action shot of an aging lady telling a story to some young children. The scene becomes animated and the lady narrates the story.
(we see a beautiful shotof Thrushcross Grange, filled with many flowers, sunlight, and neatly kept lawns. It is sunset and Edgar and Catherine are watching some birds in the trees.)
Narrator: Our world was a perfect place. So dignified and beautiful. But a dark shadow was cast upon the Grange.
(Cue a shadowy Heathcliff walking towards the house. This should remind you of the opening of Anastasia, hehe)
Catherine: Heathcliff? Heathcliff! You've come back!
Heathcliff: Cathy!
(Camera pans to a not-amused Edgar, Catherine's husband, looking at the two embrace from inside the house)
Narrator: At first Edgar was permissive of Mr Heathcliff's visits, however, after a quarrel between the two, Heathcliff was forbidden to ever visit again.
(We get a shot of Heathcliff glaring at the Grange, and then riding off. the camera pans to Cathy who is screaming and crying uncontrollably.
Narrator: Soon after, Catherine became very ill. She passed away the very day Heathcliff returned after being banished.
(We see Edgar crying in the library, and then Heathcliff howling under a tree outside, and then bashing his head into it.)
Heathcliff: Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest, as long as I am living! Haunt me, drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!
Narrator: Yes, the wicked man cursed himself with her ghost, as the murdered haunts the murderer. And a murderer he was.

(Cut back to live action)
Narrator: and that's why you shouldn't walk the moors at night; they say the ghosts haunt them to this day.
(A younger women walks into the doorway, stops, and then walks out to the balcony. She looks out onto the moors, which morph into a painting, and then our story begins. All about Cathy telling her version of the events of Wuthering Heights)

I that's it. I might add a a song later, but anyway. Enjoy! Oh, and no one's cousin's with anyone, Linton Came from nowhere. Hareton's father used to own the Heights and that's it. And while nothing really changes about Heathcliff, he is the villain simply because he's not the main character.
